LTE: Cristin McCarthy Vahey Leads on Difficult Issues
Cristin McCarthy Vahey stands out for her efforts to understand and educate others regarding Connecticut's underfunded employee pensions. This is not a simple or pleasant topic; decades of mismanagement under leadership of all political parties must be reckoned with.
When the Council of State Governments held a three-day "pension academy," Cristin was the only legislator from Connecticut to participate. Upon return, she organized a "mini pension academy" for CT state senators and representatives, attended by 100 people. Cristin supported the establishment of a $380 million trust fund and refinancing of the remaining pension liabilities as an initial step. At the same time, she fought against a proposal to shift state pension costs down to towns like Fairfield.
We need representatives who have the intelligence and interest to learn complex issues, and the will to face problems head on. We need to keep Cristin McCarthy Vahey in Hartford.
